Geographe Marine Research Volunteer Form

Bay Blues Project: Land-Based Visual Surveys

The Bay Blues Project is a comprehensive multidisciplinary study, focused on understanding the southern migration of pygmy blue whales in Geographe Bay. Our research utilises various cutting-edge techniques, including satellite tagging, genetics, acoustics, eDNA analysis, Lidar and drone-based body condition measurement, photo-ID, and behavioural studies. These techniques allow us to track the whales' movements, analyse their genetic makeup, study their vocalisations, assess their body condition, and observe their behaviour. The project's ultimate goal is to provide invaluable insights into the ecology and conservation of pygmy blue whales in this region.

Bay Blues needs YOU:

Bay Blues is really unique as it is driven not by industry, but by a not-for-profit supported by generous donations. With the entire vessel-based research team volunteering their time too, the project efforts really are a labour of love for marine conservation.

To complement our comprehensive vessel-based fieldwork, we are conducting land-based visual surveys to detect, track, and monitor pygmy blue whales as they pass through Geographe Bay. Your involvement is crucial!

Volunteer Roles:

1. Observers

2. Site Coordinators

3. Lunch Prep (using our food) / Snack Donations

Further Details:

Location: Cape Naturaliste, Dunsborough, Western Australia

1. Observers:

  • As an observer, your primary duty will be to conduct visual surveys.
  • No prior experience is required, although it is recommended.
  • Each day is divided into several 2-3-hour slots, and we appreciate any time you can commit

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Observation: You will be stationed at designated observation points along the coastline to keenly scan the ocean for blue whales.
  • Recording: When you spot a blue whale, you will record critical data, including the time of sighting, the whale's approximate location, its behaviour (e.g., surfacing, diving), and its direction of travel.
  • Communication: The information you collect will be sent to the vessel-based research team in real-time.

Please keep in mind that days in the weather can be long, exhausting, and straining on the eyes.

We will conduct a training and education session before the season commences to ensure you are well-equipped, suitably trained, and confident to undertake the surveys.

2. Site Coordinators (Seeking Interest):

  • Site Coordinators play a vital role in managing the survey efforts at each location, and liaising with the vessel-based team.
  • Responsibilities include coordinating volunteer schedules, ensuring data collection consistency and communicating land-based observations with the vessel-based team.
  • If you're interested in a role with more responsibility and the potential opportunity to join the team on the water for a day, please indicate your interest, and we will contact you with further details

Requirements:

To participate as a volunteer in our land-based visual surveys, you will need:

  • A keen interest in learning and being outdoors.
  • The ability to commit to scheduled survey shifts.
  • Good communication skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • A pair of binoculars (if available, but not mandatory).

Benefits:

By volunteering with us, you will:

  • Gain hands-on experience and insights into local and comprehensive marine research.
  • Contribute to the conservation of pygmy blue whales and their natural habitat.
  • Work alongside experts in the field and connect with fellow marine enthusiasts and ocean lovers.
